How to improve your website’s domain authority

  • July 19, 2021

Although you have heard this term before, you don’t know what it means or how you can use it to increase your business.

Don’t worry! This article will explain the definition of domain authority and how to improve your website’s authority score. We’re going to help you understand this crucial marketing concept.

Does this sound like a plan to you? Let’s move on…

What is domain authority?

Moz has created the domain authority measurement. We’ll refer them to for a definition.

Domain authority (or “DA”) is a search engine ranking score that predicts the likelihood of a website ranking on search engine result page (SERPs). Domain Authority scores range from 1 to 100. Higher scores indicate a higher ability to rank .”.

Domain authority (or “DA”) is a search engine ranking score that predicts the likelihood of a website ranking on search engine result page (SERPs). Domain Authority scores range from 1 to 100. Higher scores indicate a higher ability to rank .”.

Domain authority does not necessarily predict success. Google does not use this metric and boosting your DA will not automatically increase your website ranking in Google search result results.

Your website’s domain authority score is what will determine your niche’s competitiveness. This will allow you to choose the right keywords.

Let’s say your website has a DA score of 56. You’ll see that well-written blogs and web pages have a better chance of ranking if you are competing against websites with domain authorities between 39 to 47. If you are competing with sites with domain authority in the 80s, however, you will probably need to target a different keyword.

Other measures to increase page authority

Moz’s domain authority was the standard for evaluating websites’ reputations up until 2019. Moz made it possible for anyone to anonymously perform unlimited domain authority-checks. Users could simply visit a page on Moz’s website and type in the URL of their website to instantly receive domain and page authority results.

Moz decided to remove this feature. Users had to create an account and provide an email address to use the tool. Bots and automated systems using Moz’s DA metrics couldn’t ping the form continuously, so other companies created their own domain reputation ranking tools.

These tools are not called “domain authority”, and they are named similar to “domain reputation” and “site authority”, but all refer to the same phenomenon: a site’s specific reputation score.

These systems are not compatible. Moz DA 51 could be equivalent to a 76 using another tool. Whatever metric you use to measure page health, make sure it is consistent.

Page authority versus domain authority

Before we get into the details of domain authority, let’s clarify: domain authority is different from page authority which is another Moz metric. According to the company:

“While Page Authority measures predictive ranking strength for a single page of content, Domain Authority measures strength of entire domains and subdomains.”

This article will focus on domain authority.

How do you check domain authority?

At first glance, domain authority can seem complex. It is easy to check your site’s DA score. These are the steps to follow:

  1. Moz offers a free Link Explorer Tool.
  2. Enter your URL in the search box at the top of the page.
  3. Register now for a Moz account. Are you already a member of Moz? Log in
  4. Analyse the Moz data.

It is worth noting that Moz developed the domain authority metric. However, other SEO tools have created their own versions. Majestic, for example, has Site Explorer. Ahrefs, on the other hand has Domain Rating. If you don’t want to use Site Explorer, you can also use Ahrefs Domain Rating.

What is a good score for domain authority?

Just enter your website URL in one of Moz’s tools to check your DA score. You might be asking yourself, “Is this good?” This is also a wrong question. It’s the wrong question.

Domain authority scores can range from 1 to 100, as we have already mentioned. Each website begins at one, and it grows as it gains popularity and backlinks. Your direct competition’s domain authority scores will determine your domain score.

Let’s go back to the previous example. Assume that you have 56 DA. This is significantly lower than Google’s rank of 90. This is because your hypothetical site does not compete with Google for customers.

You discover that most of your direct competitors are in their mid-forties. This means your DA 56 is very high.

Compare your domain authority scores to determine if it is high or low. You’re doing well if it’s higher. You have work to do if it is lower. It’s that simple.

Three steps to increase domain authority

Although we’ve covered many topics, there is still one important topic that needs to be addressed: How to increase domain authority. This is what we will discuss in this section. You’ll soon be on your way to a higher degree of DA if you follow the three-step process below.

1. Start with the basics

Your website should be properly set up. This means optimizing your on-page content and making sure that your site loads quickly. Also, you need to make your website mobile-friendly so it’s easy to use on a tablet or phone. These are some tips to help you get started.

  • Your internal links are important because they allow search engines such as Google to crawl and index content. Make sure your anchor text matches that page.
  • Check your website to ensure mobile-friendliness. Mobile-friendly sites provide better user experience and are more likely to secure backlinks.
  • PageSpeed Intelligences will ensure that your website loads quickly. High bounce rates are a red flag for Google and other search engines.

2. Create high-quality backlinks

High-quality backlinks play a major role in domain authority. Your score will increase the more backlinks you have. We have written a detailed post about linking that we recommend you read. For now, here are some things to keep in mind.

  • Make great content Only links to your content will be accepted by authoritative websites if they are exceptional. Take your time to create blogs, videos, and other content. You will be better than the rest of the internet. You will see the benefits.
  • Promote your content It’s not enough to have great content. You can give it an extra boost by sharing it with your network. Increasing your social media followers. This will allow you to get more attention on your work and increase your backlink opportunities.
  • Use a link-building strategy You can get the ball rolling with top-quality content and a consistent promotion strategy. You will need to be proactive in your link building. Contact authoritative websites and ask them to add you to their site. There are two ways to do it. We discuss this in the link building article.
  • Contribute to guest blogging Guest blogging on reputable websites can be a great way of building backlinks. You may be able link to your website in the content that you write. A second benefit is that your guest post may be enjoyed by others. They can check your site for similar content and then link back to your posts.

3. Low-quality backlinks should be reduced

All links are not created equal. You need to get high-quality links, and remove low-quality ones in order to increase your domain authority score. This begs the question: What is a high-quality hyperlink?

Quality links are those that come from trusted sites. A link from The New York Times, for example, would be high-quality as the publisher is well-known and respected. On the other hand, links from spammy or unknown websites would be considered low-quality.

SEMrush is a great tool to find low-quality backlinks. It will also help you to remove them from your domain authority score. Once you have a complete list, either manually remove them or disable them via Google.

Conclusion

Domain authority is a key marketing metric. It can help you develop a strong search engine optimization strategy that will propel your company forward. Domain authority doesn’t guarantee success. Don’t let boosting your score be the goal.

Follow these three steps to increase your domain authority. Your DA will increase and your website’s ranking in search engine results will improve. Good luck!
